This Corvette Grand Sport replica was built by D&D Manufacturing circa 1995 and is one of approximately 136 total cars built. The seller, believed to be the third owner, acquired the car in January of 2016, and has added less than 40 of the 1,675 total miles shown. Power is courtesy of a GM “crate” 502ci big-block V8 engine routed through a Richmond 5-speed manual transmission backed by a Dana 44 rear axle assembly with 3.73 gears. The original build sheet for the chassis, bodywork, and miscellaneous hardware is included along with additional manufacturer's information, historical documentation, memorabilia, and some service records.
THE ORIGINAL -- The Corvette Grand Sport, designed to compete in the GT-class circuit, was the vision of legendary GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. As a lightweight version of the new-for-1963 Corvette, The Grand Sport was conceived and developed to to compete in the 1963 Le Mans race. However, due to GM’s strict enforcement of the AMA racing ban, only five cars were built, all of which "slipped" into the hands of privateers such as Roger Penske.
THE REPLICA -- D&D Manufacturing is believed to have used a real Grand Sport as the basis for the bodywork of their replica. The chassis is a custom tube frame, and the suspension is that of a C4-chassis Corvette. Research indicates that these were delivered without drivetrains, allowing each customer the freedom to choose. Approximately 136 examples were built before GM sued D&D Manufacturing, forcing them to cease operations.
