1981 Jeep

CJ-5 V8 Conversion

What We Like

Jeeps are synonymous with off-road capability. This CJ-5 underwent a mechanical refurbishment in 2001 and received upgrades to further enhance the already capable base-platform. Power now comes from a 350 cubic-inch GM Goodwrench V8 with an Edelbrock carburetor paired with a rebuilt factory 4-speed manual transmission. A classic green over tan color scheme, chrome tube-style front/rear bumpers, driving lights, and American Racing Outlaw wheels enhance the exterior. Recent maintenance in the spring of 2021 reportedly includes a carburetor adjustment and brake service. This Jeep would be equally at home on both rugged trails and at your local Cars and Coffee event.

Vehicle History & Overview

This CJ-5 underwent a cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment that was completed in 2001. The engine was upgraded to a 350 cubic-inch GM Goodwrench V8 paired with a rebuilt factory 4-speed manual transmission. A new clutch and rebuilt power steering pump were also added at the same time. Other modifications consist of a 2.5-inch lift, chrome tube-type front and rear bumpers, 5-inch lights, and American Racing Outlaw wheels shod with 32-inch BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires. The attached Carfax report shows "exceeds mechanical limits" due to the 5-digit odometer rolling over in August 1992, however, the current Georgia title is clean and shows mileage exempt.

The Jeep CJ-5 was launched in 1955, with the militarized version being known as the M38A1. Major changes were launched in 1972 after American Motors Corp took ownership of Kaiser Jeep. New engines, a strengthened and enlongated frame, longer bodywork, and a relocated, larger fuel tank. In 1977 a fully-boxed frame was introduced and in 1980 a 4-speed manual Tremec transmission replaced the aging 3-speed. Production ceased in 1983.
