North American consumers were able to purchase the E46-chassis 3-series starting with the 1999 model year, with the convertible available beginning in December 1999. An updated chassis made use of lightweight aluminum suspension components to offer improved handling while BMW’s legendarily smooth inline-six-cylinder engines provided increased power.
