1986 Fiat Bertone

X1/9 5-Speed

What We Like

With its unmistakable wedge styling, the Bertone-designed Fiat X1/9 made mid-engine motoring accessible to the masses. This later-production X1/9 features the larger 1.5L inline-four-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. Desirable upgrades include OZ Racing wheels, a Momo steering wheel, quad-tipped Ansa exhaust, and a Sony stereo. Per the selling dealer, this X1/9 has service records since 2003 including a timing-belt replacement in February 2022, and reportedly benefits from a re-spray performed approximately two years ago. This little runabout makes a great entry point to the mid-engine Italian sports car experience.

Vehicle History & Overview

This X1/9 was manufactured by Bertone S.p.A. in June 1985. The first record on the included Carfax report is from December 1994 when mileage was noted as 94,268. Current mileage is shown as 127,800. Service records since 2003 are included, with parts invoices dated February 2022 show timing-belt components, service parts, and braking components as highlighted in the Servicing & Documentation section. Modifications appear to be limited to OZ Racing alloy wheels, a Momo steering wheel, Ansa exhaust, and a Sony stereo. A factory exhaust, steering wheel, red and black targa tops, and alloy wheel set with tires date-coded 2021 are also included.

The wedge-shaped Fiat X1/9 was developed from a 1969 Autobianchi concept, with styling from the famed Bertone studio. Fiat’s recently-launched 128 donated its transverse engine/transmission assembly, which was placed behind the passengers to offer a mid-engine design. Front and rear luggage compartments offered reasonable practicality for a sports car. Starting in 1978 the X1/9 received an enlarged 1.5L inline-four-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission, which offered greater overall performance and driveability. Bertone took over production from 1983 and made steady improvements until series production ended in 1989.
