1946 MG

TC

What We Like

Few cars embody the back-to-basics, no-frills sports car ideal better than this MG TC – as evidenced by its low curb-weight, inline-four-cylinder engine, 4-speed manual transmission, and uncomplicated interior. This TC is believed to have been restored circa 1990 and retains its original numbers-matching engine, and a recent service totaling nearly $8,000 helps ensure this vehicle can be used as designed. Its timeless early 20th-century styling is draped in a classic black-over-tan color combination, paired with a tan top, and matching set of tan all-weather side-curtains. This car provides an opportunity for those seeking a 1940s-style drive in one of the forerunners of the sports-car segment.

Vehicle History & Overview

This MG TC reportedly underwent a comprehensive restoration circa 1990 and won a National First Prize as part of the Antique Automobile Club of America in 1992. The seller acquired the vehicle in March 2021 and repairs to maintain road-worthiness were recently completed, totaling nearly $8,000. Work included but was not limited to, repainting the wheels, engine, transmission, servicing the suspension and fuel systems, and replacing vehicle fluids.

Released in 1945 as the first post-war MG, the TC was also the most powerful yet of the "Midget" series. Notable engine improvements included higher compression ratio, a hydraulically adjusted timing chain tensioner, and automatic mechanical timing advance in the distributor. The rear of the cabin was widened to offer increased seat comfort, which resulted in narrower running boards. In a nod to MG's time trials history, the tachometer was located directly in front of the driver while the speedometer was on the other side of the dash in front of the passenger, as can be seen in the 1946 example shown here.
