1974 Volkswagen

Type 2 Westfalia

What We Like

Few vehicles are as iconic as the Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia camper van. This van is believed to be a two-owner example and was recently discovered by the selling dealer in upstate New York after reportedly sitting for nearly 17 years. The van is believed to be highly original, and the interior and distinctive plaid upholstery appear to be in nice shape, especially given the overall exterior condition. Modifications are said to be limited to an altimeter gauge in place of the clock and an older AM/FM/cassette stereo. This Westfalia is offered at NO RESERVE and is ready for the next owner to resurrect it and enjoy life on the road.

Vehicle History & Overview

This Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia is believed to have been sold new in 1974 and stayed with its first owner until 1988. The reported second owner purchased the van in April 1988 and enjoyed touring the US and Canada until a repair sidelined the van in 2005. The selling dealer acquired the van from the second owner after it had sat for nearly 17 years. A factory key, official service manual, and spare side lamp are included.

The second-generation Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) was launched in 1967 and thanks in part to year-over-year improvements, in 1971 the vehicle was known internally as the T2b. 1971 introduced front disc-brakes and wheels with increased cooling passages for the brakes. In 1973 new bumpers were added that necessitated moving the turn signals, which in turn allowed for a revised crash structure that saw the Type 2 able to meet US safety standard for passenger cars. 1974 vans such as this one saw an increase in engine displacement to 1.8L, which provided a much-needed boost in output to 67 horsepower. US series production ended in 1979.
